2019 Cadillac XT5 vs. BMW X5

2019 CADILLAC XT5 VS. BMW X5
A luxury crossover is one of the best vehicles any driver could purchase today, combining space and practicality with excellent performance, resale value, and features. If you are curious about cars like the Cadillac XT5 and BMW X5 but aren’t sure which is right for you, take a look at our guide to the similarities and differences between these two high-end SUVs.

Performance

Both the Cadillac XT5 and BMW X5 use eight-speed transmissions, with the X5 using a dual-clutch. Brands like Cadillac and BMW usually place a V-6 as the standard engine in their mid-lineup crossover models, and that is true with both of these vehicles. The main difference is horsepower, with the XT5 offering 310 and the X5 offering 335. However, while the X5 may hold a bit more horsepower, it does not have the advantage in fuel economy, which we’ll discuss later. The Cadillac XT5 also has a higher displacement of 3,600 cubic centimeters compared to the X5’s 3,000.

Luxury & Convenience

The BMW X5 seats up to seven people, with five seats in the base model, while the Cadillac XT5 only seats five. However, brands like Cadillac never skimp on seat comfort and spaciousness. The XT5 beats the five-seat version of the X5 in both front and rear legroom, so you can be sure that your passengers will have room to relax.
As for entertainment and audio, the XT5 uses a premium Bose audio system, while the X5 uses a HiFi system. Both include HD radio. The XT5, however, includes an 8-inch color infotainment touch screen, while the X5’s screen is only 7 inches. Many drivers now sync their mobile devices with their vehicles using apps like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, while the 2019 XT5 includes both of these common systems standards, BMW’s X5 offers only Apple CarPlay and likely will not offer Android Auto anytime soon.

Safety & Security

Both the Cadillac XT5 and BMW X5 come standard with anti-lock brakes, front side airbags, curtain airbags, and various other modern airbag innovations. However, the X5 has not yet been NHTSA crash-tested, while the XT5 earned a five-star rating. The XT5’s electronic parking brake can be conveniently activated with a button from the left side of the instrument panel.

Fuel Economy

In terms of city fuel economy, the Cadillac XT5 and BMW X5 have nearly identical values, with 18-19 mpg for the former and 17-20 mpg for the latter. If you do a lot of highway driving, however, the XT5 is a clear winner, offering a tighter 25-26 mpg compared to 22-26 mpg.

Pricing

When it comes to pricing, which many drivers consider the final hurdle, Cadillac’s luxury SUV is the easy choice. Starting 2019 XT5 models have an MSRP of $41,695, a much more economical prospect than the X5’s $60,700. The XT5’s lower price makes it even more accessible to drivers interested in a certified pre-owned Cadillac instead of buying brand new. The 2019 Cadillac XT5 and BMW X5 have identical four-year/50,000-mile basic warranties and a similar set of features and specs. Based on the differences, however, many drivers emphasizing seat comfort, safety ratings, and value for money should find the 2019 Cadillac XT5 to be the more appealing model.
